Choctaw Drama & Stagecraft pulls off six-peat
Choctaw High School’s Drama & Stagecraft program has claimed their sixth straight and 12th overall Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Class 6A One Act State Championship with a breathtaking one-act performance of “Property Rites.”
In addition to securing Choctaw’s 12th state one-act play title, CHS also secured the prestigious State Tech Award and had two All-State Actors including Ginnie Douthitt and Dylan Herrin.
After claiming the school’s 13th Regional Championship Choctaw High School hosted the 2016 OSSAA One Act State Competition Thursday, Oct. 27.
With the recent success of Choctaw Drama and Stage Craft extended their record of Choctaw’s most awarded program, and the most successful high school theatre program in the state.
Choctaw has only lost at state three times including a loss to Norman, once to Edmond North and once to Tulsa Union. Another year Choctaw had tied Tulsa Union for first.
“Since I’ve been in the district we’ve gone to state every year, and we’ve placed every year. The bottom line is I want the kids to have an excellent production,” said Director Maryjane Burton. “We don’t go in thinking about how to win. Instead we work to entertain people and make them feel something, and that’s what theatre is about.”
While winning awards isn’t the main goal of Choctaw Drama and Stagecraft, championships seem to be the natural result whenever they compete.
Choctaw’s champion cast and crew host public performances this week, and encourage everyone to come witness what makes Choctaw the most awarded high school program in Oklahoma.
