Steady improvement during summer workouts is enough to satisfy most coaches. And as the Bridge Creek boys basketball team closes out their summer season, Jason Sanders is a happy man.

“Our guys have really showed some improvement this summer and played our best game of the summer when we beat Choctaw,” Sanders said Monday night after team’s 32-30 win over the Class 6A squad. “We’ve been getting more scoring and we’re playing better on defense.”

Sanders outlined the team’s need for more offense earlier this summer. Seniors Jacob Mason and Andrew Dawkins appear ready to fill that need, while Brad Shelton has progressed as the team’s floor general.

“Those three seniors have been very impressive this summer,” he said. “Andrew and Jacob are becoming consistent scorers and Brad isn’t a big time scorers, but has really figured out how to play the point guard position.”

Mason, the team’s top scorer from last year, has continued to polish his outside shot. He drained six 3-pointers in the win over Choctaw Monday. He finished with 20 of the team’s 32 points in the win.

“Jacob is our best outside shooter and when he gets hot, he’s really tough behind the 3-point line,” Sanders said.

Dawkins has also made strides with his offensive game. The senior forward has scored more than 20 points twice in summer league play.

“He’s been a big difference maker and gives us a lot of experience,” Sanders said. “This summer he’s improved his rebounding and become a consistent scorer inside.”

Bridge Creek played Mustang JV, Union City and Glencoe Tuesday and Tecumseh and Lexington Wednesday. They return to action Thursday for the final day of the Newcastle Summer League.
