The stage was set. The victor would continue their season and the loser would turn in their equipment early.

Mustang hosted Southmoore in what was a winner take all. It was a familiar feeling as last year the Broncos and the Sabercats were in the same predicament. But this time Mustang came out on top 41-21 to continue to the playoffs.

“I’m extremely happy, especially for our seniors,” Mustang coach Jeremy Dombek said.

Dombek and the new coaching staff will end their first campaign at Mustang in the postseason. The Broncos end
their two-year drought of the playoffs this year.

For the Mustang seniors they will experience the playoffs for the first time in their high school careers.

“We’ve had a lot of great seniors who’ve had a lot of great moments on that field. It would be a shame if we couldn’t provide a playoff berth for them,” Dombek said.

Mustang’s offense clicked from the opening kickoff until the saw all zeros.

Mustang had 225 yards on the ground and 118 through the air. The Broncos ran the football a staggering 57 times. Frankie Edwards led the Broncos with 151 yards on 36 attempts and two touchdowns.

“Frankie made unbelievable plays,” Dombek said.

The Bronco defense played strong. Southmoore had 261 yards rushing and just 21 yards passing, completing 7
of 15 attempts.

Chandler Garrett went 12 for 20 for 118 yards and two touchdown passes through the air. Garrett added 71 yards rushing and two scores on the ground.

“I thought our sophomore quarterback [Garrett] with this type of situation, with these types of conditions played extremely smart,” Dombek said.

Southmoore’s Pierce Spead had 18 carries for 173 yards and all three Sabercats touchdowns.

The Sabercats struck first after electing to receive the football with a Spead 8-yard run. Southmoore led 7-0
with 9:09 in the first quarter.

“We never hung our head,” Dombek said.

Mustang answered with an impressive drive that began at their own 35-yard-line. The Broncos picked up four first downs en route to a Garrett 3-yard pass to Joey Snodgrass. The extra point was blocked and MHS was down 7-6.

After a three and out for Southmoore, Mustang’s Garrett carried in a 2-yard touchdown to take the lead 13-7 with 3:11 in the first frame.

Mustang added to their lead after Edwards ran in a 1-yard run at the beginning of the second quarter to lead 20-7.

Southmoore’s Spead ran in his second score of the night to pull to 20-14 with 9:23 in the half.

Garrett led Mustang to the 1-yard line before he took in a score on the ground for a 26-14 lead at the break.

Two weeks ago at Lawton the Broncos were in a tight football game with Lawton at the half. Things changed quickly in the second half at Lawton. But on Senior Night the Broncos kept their foot on the pedal and did not slow down.

Southmoore’s Spead ran in his third touchdown of the night with a 9-yard run to cut Mustang’s lead to 26-21 at the 2:21 mark in the third quarter.

The two teams had one quarter to either end their season or continue their run. Mustang made the most out of it.

Garrett found Colton Hadlock for a 5-yard touchdown and also on the 2-point conversion for a 34-21 lead with 11:09 to play.

Edwards added a 5-yard run in the final quarter to continue on a 41-21 victory and will continue their season.

The Broncos’ emotions were all over the field as the final second ticked off of the clock and the players rushed
the field. The win pushed Mustang to the playoffs for the first time since 2010 and they will be the No. 4 seed.

“Words can’t even describe what I’m feeling right now. It’s awesome,” Mustang senior Tristan Hill said.

Mustang (6-4) will go to Norman North (7-3) on Friday, Nov. 15, at Norman.

“I’m happy for the kids,” Dombek said.
