A spokesman for the Westbury South Neighborhood Association said the purchase of the Westbury Country Club golf course has made the association’s dilemma in keeping the course from being developed, "more complex."
Dakil Auctioneers of Oklahoma City sold the 157-acre, 16-hole course to an entity entitled Westbury I, II, III LLC. on Friday, Nov. 1.
"It sold for $1,334,500 at $8,500 an acre," said Louis Dakil of Dakil Auctioneers. "The clubhouse and an additional 10 acres are still for sale."
Dakil said the buyer of the course did not want to disclose any information until the closing of the property, which is typically up to 30 days.
Residents in Westbury South are hoping to keep their golf course.
Benjamin Han, who has owned the country club since 1990, recently sold 40 acres and two holes of the 18-hole course to local developer Chris White. The transaction upset many residents living near the course when they heard that White planned on developing 1,300 to 1,500 square-foot homes on the land, saying it would drive their property values down while creating traffic and draining problems.
Marty Lawson, the spokesperson for the Westbury South Neighborhood Association (WSNA), said Han turned down two offers to buy the course last week before the auction.
"The auction has made things more complicated for us, because now we have to talk to the person that bought the 16 holes and Chris White who has the two other holes," Lawson said.
Many residents in Westbury South say the golf course was a major draw for them to move there and hope that it will remain a course.
"This isn’t over," Lawson said.
The WSNA is stating that development of the course would raise flooding issues as the land has been part of a 100 year-old flood plain, Lawson said.
"We are working to bring several issues forward that show that this land should not be developed," he said.
