A man was mediflighted to an area hospital after his vehicle struck a semi head-on near the South Canadian River bridge on U.S. Highway 81 in Union City. The accident occurred just north of the bridge on the morning of Thursday, June 20.

Union City Police Chief Eddie Dickerson said a minivan traveling northbound on the highway crossed the centerline, colliding with a semi driving southbound.

"The semi was knocked eastward off the highway into a field," Dickerson said. "After the van hit the semi, it spun around and hit the trailer of the escort vehicle to the semi."

The driver of the van, Danny Phelps, 51, of Fort Sill was flown to OU Medical Center. The driver of the semi was uninjured.

"The last I heard was that he was stable, but I didn't know if he was in critical condition or not," Dickerson said. "We don't know why he crossed the centerline."

Union City emergency personnel responded to the accident as Minco police worked traffic on the south side of the bridge. The Oklahoma High Patrol also worked the accident.
