CHICKASHA – Last year Mustang won the Chickasha Tournament. This year the Broncos did not slip up and kept that streak alive.

The Mustang Broncos competed in the Chickasha Tournament last Thursday through Saturday and earned four wins.

“We played good up there,” Mustang coach Scott Selby said. “We’re starting to play closer to a full game.”

In the championship game on Saturday Chris Gibbons controlled the mound against Cache. Gibbons threw 16 strikeouts, gave up just two hits, allowed one walk and threw a shutout in the 4-0 win.

Mustang started the tournament with a 15-5 win over Putnam City. The Broncos then beat Altus 6-5 and then Heritage hall 9-1.

The four wins in the tournament has extended Mustang’s winning streak to six games in a row.

“We’re playing with more confidence. They’re not being selfish,” Selby said. “We’ve been doing things right. They’ve gotten better.”

Mustang will look to extend their six game winning streak when they host Sapulpa on Friday in a double-header.

The Broncos are at the point in the season where they are hoping they keep getting better and are playing their best at the end of the regular season.

“This time of the year you slowly want to climb,” Selby said.

Mustang has district games against Sapulpa and U.S. Grant upcoming. With the thoughts of hosting a regional in the Broncos’ minds, Mustang knows that mistakes cannot happen.

“We try to approach every game in the tournament like a district game. We try to do things rights every game,” Selby said. “We’ve got important games coming up and they know that.”
